Len Dawson powers San Francisco past the Bengals in week one

In the 1970 Fantasy Draft league I played the 49'ers with Len Dawson and came out strong against the Bengals who were being led by Dennis Shaw.

The first half was a blowout, with the 49'ers scoring all over the Bengals and RB Ron Johnson breaking a 80 yard run and finishing the game with 139 yards. The 49'ers had 3 TD's and a FG in the first 3 quarters. Then the Bengals started to click and scored 3 TD's closing the score to 24-21.

The 49'ers had the ball late in the 4th when Dawson dropped back and threw an interception with 44 seconds left. From their own 48 the Bengals had no timeouts and had 4 shots at the endzone and came up empty. The game ended on two sacks and the 49'ers hung on. Shaw for the Bengals finished with 19 completions for 248 yards. He spread the ball all over with 4 receivers having over 40+ yards catching.

Len Dawson finished 16/25 with 280 yards. His primary target was Shanklin who had 136 yards.

Action PC Football Fantasy 1970 League Draft Results

Finally got my league all setup and what a weird fantasy draft it was for 1970. Some of the noticeable weird things:

  • Bradshaw and Staubach BOTH ended up on the Steelers. The draft was totally random too so I had nothing to do with that!

  • My early season prediction to win it all is Washington Redskins. They got Csonka and Kiick as well as QB Jim Hart. They also beat me week one 10-0 (I was the Jets) and their defense is just plain nasty.

  • Dick Butkus was drafted by Detroit with the 8th pick

  • Sonny Jurgensen was draft by Green Bay with pick 16 and in week one threw for 278 yards and 2 TD's

  • Daryle Lamonica went to Houston and he had 300 yards passing against Green Bay in week one.

Speaking of the Jets I drafted for them and took Namath so that much stayed true. I drafted Biletnikoff and Sauer but didn't really get a good running back. Also have Alex Karras on my defensive line.

My first game coaching in a while and I lost 10-0 and just could not move the ball. I didn't get blown out but I started Gary Cuozzo at QB and later Namath came in and threw for 104 yards but it was too late by then. Below is the summary.

Other results for week one are starting to roll in including Buffalo who is ranked number one so far in scoring after they drubbed Oakland 29-13 behind Joe Kapp's 201 yards passing and 3 TD passes. He also had one rushing TD. Sadly Dave Robinson was injured and lost for 13 weeks (torn patellar tendon).

Starting on hand painted Unitas

Got some of the figures I ordered in and was a little disappointed to see that the Pro Line figures are NOT really the same size as the standard electric football figures. They are much smaller and now this threatens to make my 1970 Baltimore Colts look really dumb. Ah well live and learn. To get some practice in I am hand painting the QB figure.

I added the facemask. Those I ordered from the Tudor site.

Adding endzone pylons

I picked up some map magnets from Amazon at this link:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014LBVZI4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am using those to represent endzone pylons on my board and since they are relatively cheap I have enough to use for marking ball positions with the passing sticks and other things like player spots etc.

I think they look pretty good. I was going to make them orange but I may just leave them red for now and spray paint some black etc.

Base tweaking has started, will be rough going

Started tweaking bases and not a fan of these generic dial bases, I feel like they do not have enough prongs on the bottom. I just got my tweak pliers in after losing my other ones. I went with Baby Wubbers Flat Nose Jeweler's Pliers. The Amazon link is here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y07V6O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The normal straight bases seem to work a lot better when tweaked, but as you know you need different bases for some position players. Again I am not going to be playing pro or anything but still I want decent performance in games.

Electric Football First Team Build: 70 Colts

The process to gather supplies and figures for electric football is underway. The first team I am modeling will be the 1970 Baltimore Colts.

I have a new board coming as well as some home uniform colts and special pose figures for Unitas and others.

I grabbed some team roster names and helmet decals from https://www.beenutt.com  but a lot of my stuff has not arrived yet. I will be using standard figures but adding special pose figures for running backs and QB etc. Those will have to be hand painted so hopefully I can match the colors.

Action PC Football Replays: Cin vs. Oak and Pitt vs. Hou Week 1 1970

Two more replay results. One I did not play and auto simmed and one I did play and lost. The auto simmed game was very interesting. It featured one of the worst offensive outputs yet in the first week from the Bengals.

Take a look at the offensive drives in this game and the Bengals team stats. They were 1-14 on 3rd downs. Let that sink in.

The next game I played the pre 1974 good Steelers and just could not  move the ball. I played admirably on defense but I could not score to save my life. I ended up losing 13-7 and a missed field goal and several Bradshaw interceptions that did me in. At one point I was in position to win this game but the fates would not allow it.

Action PC Football: NY Jets vs. Boston Patriots Week 2 1970

The Jets were looking to recover from a devastating week one loss to Cleveland by a point and took out their anger on the Boston Patriots who came in after getting trounced by Miami. The day looked promising as the Jets stormed out to a 14-7 lead but both defenses were stubborn and Boston tied it at 14 on the running of Jim Nance. The Jets suffered a horrible blow to their Super Bowl hopes when Namath was injured for the year and carried off on a cart with a leg fracture.

A few plays later the ever dependable Matt Snell went down for the season with a twisted knee. Woodall came in to guide the Jets to a final late touchdown throwing a second TD pass to Maynard who had 101 yards on the day. Snell and Boozer could not seem to get going and the Jets running game was anemic.

The only bright spot for Boston was Nance who had 69 yards rushing and a touchdown. Jets coach Weeb Ewbank mentioned that with two of his stars out for the year now the rest of the team would have to step up and Boozer would be their main back. He did not comment on a permanent starter to replace Namath in Week 3.

Action PC Football: 1970 Week 2 Steelers vs. Broncos

The 0-1 Steelers meet up with the 0-1 Broncos in a defensive clash near the end of week 2.

Action PC Football 1970 Week 1 Replay Jets vs. Browns

Got my Action PC Football up to date. I am replaying the entire season but with 16 games. I am only playing a few teams manually each week. I started week one by playing the Jets against the Browns and the Jets lost a heartbreaker due to a pass interference call and two missed Jim Turner field goals. I then played Minnesota and got stomped as Len Dawson passed all over my defense. The Purple People Eaters had a good day up front though.

If you want to see the full Jets game replay see the YouTube video below. Also in this post is a picture of the final stats. Snell had quite the day.

New blog but old hobby

This blog is devoted to my oldest passion which is NFL football. Not just in a sense of typical sports coverage but more sports simulations. My video gaming and board gaming blog is scattered with several examples of this in the past especially with APBA football.

I am hoping to split that off here and cover my new passion of getting back into Electric Football as well. Up at the top work has begun already with links to popular sites I have found in one week since my return. The rest will come in gaps no doubt. This is a split off blog from my gaming blog at http://hudsonshideout.blogspot.com/

Not many people really blog anymore but I loathe Facebook and the forums are too restricted so I turned back to ole Google Blogger.
